Assignment 02: Animation Control Challenges with Creative Techniques Individual

Assignment Brief

Progress

First, I need to choose what kind of animation I wanted to do, and because I missed the class teaching rigging techniques, I think I shouldn't do something way too complicated in case I am bad at it. Thus, I choose to do a hand animation. But a simple hand only animation might be boring, so I want to add some colours into it, and the hand is more robotic looking rather than a normal hand. This might help me to create a more interesting concept for it. Then, I think of adding a simple sphere into it as a ball. The hand can play with the ball which add some interactions.

After having a rough idea, I started learning rigging online. It is quite simple and easy to learn. But I did face a few problems. I have problem combining the mesh and armature, because I cannot find the exact button or command from the tutorial video online. But I soon find the command easily and successfully combined them and I am able to move the hand and start rigging process.

I first start with squeezing and releasing the hand motion, then the hand start to walk using two fingers, the animation then followed by the hand spinning a ball. After I finish half of the rigging, I render it out first as the rendering takes time too and I do not want to render all the animation at once as this might be way too heavy for the computer. After all of the rigging and animation, I add the rendered video into CapCut, then I add in a music to present the video better.

Reflection
From this assignment, I learn a lot about rigging, even though I didn't manage to do a character rigging but I still get to do a basic rigging process. It is quite fun to plan out an animation too even it is a very short one. The hand rigging process is not too hard but is quite time consuming as I need to adjust every little bone one by one to get the position or movement I wanted. My product is not perfect as the movement is still not smooth enough and the animation also need better camera movement. But I do feel more confident in doing rigging as I have this small learning experience.

I will continue to learn more about rigging and animation, I hope that I can show a better product in my next assignment which involve character rigging. Thus, I am grateful to have this assignment to helps me understand better on 3D modelling, rigging and animation, so I can have a clearer vision on what I wanted to do in my final project and also as future references.
