Assignment 02: Concept & Narrative Development
Assignment brief:
Week 4
We have a consultation session on Monday with Mr. Zeon. We explain about our storyline and show him the slides that we have done for now. Mr. Zeon did not have many comments on it and said that our work is fine. He agreed our open ending suggestion and also adding narrator. We just have to keep going and do our storyboard now, add in the information he required for assignment 2 such as annotation, timing, emotional journey and more. Since Sze Ching has already written a very detailed version of the storyline, we now only need to write a summary about it, to sum it up in one simple table form, so reader can easily understand our story. Our final assignment submission is currently set on 24 March.
Our group then have a very simple meeting to delegate tasks. Sze Ching and Yeye is tasked with drawing the storyboard, while me and Riona will be doing the slides. Since we are both not that good in digital drawing, we use this period to start our assignment 3. I started to do research on bully case, gather as much newspaper as I can to use in our ending scene. I also do a little research on the school bullying information worldwide, like how many cases there are in a year. We also discuss again the storyline flow to make sure everyone has the same direction, and our illustrator can start to draw the storyboard.

Newspaper:
I have problems finding newspaper, there are not many resources online for me to get these newspaper pieces. I search in different languages in order to get more resources. A lot of newspaper site need subscription in order to read it, or I need to register on the website in order to get it, but it required other country's information which I can't get. So, I need to search for long hours in order to find all these. I included more cases in Malaysia, as I think it is important to mention about local news. It is more relatable. I need to filter all these newspapers, as some of them are not exactly what we want, or it is way too blurry. After the filtering, there are not many newspaper pieces left. So, I think about adding real-life school bullying picture that were being captures by CCTV or phone. This gives me more resources. Finally, I think I have enough resources.

Week 5
We have another consultation session today; we showed our slides and storyboards for Mr. Zeon to review. My summary is quite different than the one he wanted. But Riona do something similar to what he wants, so I need to use that to write the summary, while Riona have to write another version. We need to focus more on emotional journey instead of explaining the visuals. For example, we need to mention what the audiences will fell in that particular scene, sad? angry? scared? We need to explain that well. We also need to include theme, objectives, target audiences and more that he wants us to include. For our storyboard, he only mentioned a little bit of comments, only minor adjustment needed to be done. So, Sze Ching and Yeye will continue their drawings. While me and Riona continue to do the slides and assignment 3.
I change my slides writing according to the comments and requirements given. I use back the table made by Riona and made some minor changes on it and add description. I also write briefly about the theme, objectives and more by using the template given by Mr. Zeon. We also discuss about what title should we give to our project. Sze Ching suggests using simple and direct name that is easy to understand, like classroom nightmare. Riona suggest a name that is more sensitive but also more meaningful, 4-10. This is the classroom number in the case of Zulfarhan Osman Zulkarnain. We all agreed that this is a suitable name for our project as we use a lot of information based on this case.

Project details:
In the meantime, I also explored about platform that allowed me to do simple animation for this newspaper scene. I explored about Phase. It is very similar to Figma, but it is used to create simple and short animation. I think it is suitable for this scene, so I learned a little bit about it and start to do this scene in Phase. It is pretty smooth at first, it is easy to learn and use, so I am able to do it. But unfortunately, after I finish my first draft, it is unable to export. I am deeply disappointed as it wasted my time and efforts. I have to do it all again in another platform.

From this experience, I learned that I have to try to export the product first before putting so much time and efforts in it. I will remember to do it next time. After this failure, I changed to focus on Adobe After Effect. I also explore CapCut in the meantime, to do the first warning scene.
Sze Ching and Yeye finished the storyboard, and we all check through the storyboard and storyline. We also review the slides to make sure everything is done. After all the checking, Sze Ching submit our assignment along with our e-portfolio links on 9 March.
