Weekly Class Notes & Exercise

Week 1

Module Information:

I didn't attend the first lecture as I was still at my hometown. I got information from my classmates, Sze Ching on what is going on the first day, and what should we do for assignments. She mentioned that we need to form group to do a projection mapping with the theme - Pulse. I am quite worried that I cannot find teammates as I am not there physically, but luckily, I am team up with Sze Ching already and she is finding teammates to join us. Yeye mentioned that she wants to join with Sze Ching, so we have another member. Next, Riona, who is also not physically present in the class today, also joined our group. We quickly form a group chat and talk about the project. We were all excited about it and nervous too as it seems like we need to do very complicated project in a very short time. Luckily, we have Sze ching to tell us about the project for me and Riona who were not present. As soon as I get the information, I started brainstorm for ideas.

Site Visit

I'm back to school, so I'm able to go to the site visit at Muzium Telekom. It is a very fun experience; we were able to look at some of the projection mapping samples at there and have a short lecture with Mr. Shakir. We learn about the position of the projector, the size of the site, some possibilities we can explore on projection mapping. Mr. Shakir showed us some projection mapping examples in slides, like projection mapping on heritage building, he also told us that doing projection mapping outdoor is more complicated than indoor, since there are many obstacles and unexpected incidents that might happen at outdoor environment. So, since that this is our first time doing real projection mapping, this site is actually really good for us, it is indoor, it's small, not too big, yet big enough for nice projection mapping.

Week 2

What makes a good mapping canvas?
- white canvas
- complex features, like heritage building, have a lots of architecture elements like column, arch, decorations to let us explore on the deformations.
- clear path
- a place where people can gather together in large number

Heritage building is always the best building to do projection mapping, it has a lot of form and structure with different depth, allowing us to play with the structure, exploring different possibilities to create something interesting that match the form of building.

Our project theme is Pulse/Nadi. We can link a lot of different concepts with it, it is a very adaptable theme. We can link life, music, tempo, circulation to pulse. To start brainstorming/ideation, we can always start with a mind map, with just words. Next, we do sketches to visualize our idea. We can first find pictures online for inspiration too. We need to do storyboard for different scene. We can explore on different kinds of art style, techniques to create the content. Mr. Shakir highlighted about story. He wants us to tell our own stories. Our content must be meaningful and tell a good story to audiences, delivering some kind of messages.

Some lecture slides:

Template given:

Details:
Theme: Pulse/Nadi
Time frame: 1 minute
Site: Muzium Telekom
Content: Video, we only need to create video in given template
Software: After Effect, Resolume Arena, or any software we can use like blender, capcut

Week 3

Mr. Shakir recap last lecture a little bit and start his new lecture. Today, we learn about the more technical side of projection mapping. He introduces us some projectors, how to set up projectors on site, what do people do or avoid in outdoor projection mapping site. One of the experiences he shared is about setting up projectors at outdoor, with trees as obstacles, they cannot cut down the tree, so they need to figure out a way to tilt the projector, they have to adjust it on site, to ensure the projection fully cover the building. I feel that this is quite adventurous job and an exciting yet tiring one. They need to work under the sun and try to avoid the rain also at outdoor setting.

Mr. Shakir then proceed to show us more projection samples, most of it are outdoor projection. He also shares some software that we can use to create the content. He introduces about storyboard and animatic. Storyboard is just a lot of illustration showing different scenes with description written, while animatic is using the illustration to create sound design, for example, a lion illustration, we should pair it with lion's roaring sound. He suggests using CapCut to do it since it is very easy to use for this simple animatic.

Week 4

In this week, Mr. Zeon is the one who gives us lecture. Mr. Zeon talked about different use of projection mapping, we can use it in art installation, advertising and all kinds of events. He showed us plenty of samples of projection mapping. Mr. Zeon also explain more about assignment today. We need to include moodboard, storyboard and story narrative in assignment 2. For our group, we have already produced the moodboard and story narrative. We mostly focus on storyboard and the emotional journey in assignment 2. He gave us sample on how to write the assignment 2:

He also shared about the importance of moodboard, it helps us to maintain the consistency of art style throughout the project. Storyboard might be the most important element in this assignment, it help us to make sure each scene's timing, it's meaning and effects. It also helps us to visualize the final outcome. Mr. Zeon shows us different kinds of storyboard and told us about different ways to create it, for example, we can use AI to generate the image and edit it to become our storyboard, or even the final product.

Week 5

In today's lecture, Mr. Shakir share about the 12 principles of animation. He showed us examples about what these principles about, and how it explains the animation and help us to create better animation. He also showed us videos explaining these principles.

1. Squash & Stretch
 2. Anticipation
 3. Staging
 4. Straight Ahead Action / Pose to Pose
 5. Follow Through 6. Ease In & Ease Out
 7. Arcs 8. Secondary Action
 9. Timing 10. Exaggeration
 11. Solid Drawing
 12. Appeal

He then shared about the use of motion graphic and some software that can create this. Mr. Shakir introduce us about video editing techniques which will be very helpful in future projects.

1. Ways to create content

- record surroundings, yourself to get some footage

- use graphic/3D

2. Import Photoshop file into After Effect

- Lecturer shares method to import photoshop file into after effect, to allow changing graphic in photoshop and edit animation in after effect back-to-back

3. After Effect

-  have team project/file, so multiple users can edit same project

He then proceeds to teach us a little bit about after effects, like keyframe, transform, composition and such. He taught us about creating a shape, adding image, masking, and simple animation.

Below is my practice on class:

Week 6

This week, Mr. Shakir continue teaching after effect. He taught us masking which we can use to do open and close eyes motion while a background video is playing behind. He then proceeds to teach:

- Blurry effect

- cc repetile, Kaleida

- rotoscope, rotobrush

- puppet tool, use puppet pin to pinpoint the joint, finger, and then move it as you want

- parenting - use it to separate parts of the body (example), and move the body part

- wiggle - click alternate press scale, expression scale will come out and type in code to do wiggle, it will automatically wiggle

- plug in - motion array & aescripts

- AE Rendering

- can edit video or convert audio into different format

- Render settings:best settings

- H264 - render

- quicktime: for transparent background, RGB +Alpha

- Adobe media encoder

- can turn audio file or video into different format

- benefits: can do ae and rendering at the same time

- follow the render output requirement given in the lecture slides

- mp4 is much smaller, resolution is smaller too

- mov is clearer and bigger

I did some practice on class but couldn't really follow up:

We have a lucky draw session, where winner group can get tickets for Le Petit Prince Exhibition. Glow Lab win that. We then have a small assignment brief to further explain what we should be doing for final project:

- Documentation: how you improve your design, the steps? what you do?

- any sketches, what you improve based on comments

- in presentation slide, 5 mins per group then start projection mapping

- what application u use, what you do with it

- need to submit whatever file that we use to produce the work

- 'we present by we transfer', use this platform to upload file and copy link to submit the file

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Week 7

Mr. Shakir teach our class about Resolume Arena today, but I didn't attend the class since I was not feeling well, but I still go to the consultation session after class. I'm sorry that I wasn't able to join that day's class. I hope that I will have another chance to learn about Resolume Arena in future.
