Project 1A: Physical & Digital Collage (Week 1 - Week 3)

Since I'm late for this module, other classmates have already started on this task earlier. I started to look at the lecture video and notes during the weekend and start the collage process. My generous friend gives me 3 E-pop magazines, because I have none. I use these 3 e-pop magazines to create collages for this task, along with some of the materials that I found in my room, that I think might be useful for it.

1.

Actually, this is my third and last collage, but because of this is the one I feel has the most potential and has the better collage among all, I decide to introduce this first. As you can see in below, I use only the materials from the magazine to create this collage. I first found some pictures that I think have really cool colour and lighting. These photo gives me an inspiration, I wanted to explore a funky, fun, idol themed collage.

I try to organize the idols' body or faces arrangement, to create a very abstract and fun character. The main character, which is the green bulb-like head character, it's like a very cool idol, posing. I then add several 'idols' to complete the collage. I also use mic, camera, glasses to give off a 'star' like vibes.

2.

This is my second collage, it is more clean, straightforward, and I play with the composition more in this one. I use simple colour palette, black, grey, red to create a strong, bold statement. This collage presents a more glamorous and luxurious vibe, with a show themed going on. I add in frames, trying to create picture in frames kind of visuals.

Again, I use mostly the magazine materials for this collage, except for the shiny particles that I added at the end of the collage, it is from a fragrant bag. The first picture that I cut out is Seulgi's picture at the right bottom corner. Her gold gloves, with her red lips create a very strong visual. Along with this picture, it gives me an idea to create a glamorous show theme.

3.

This is my first collage. I use a lot of materials for this one, as I want to explore on the texture part. It has a background story or meaning behind it. The character is often being called weak, sheltered and protected by family, like flowers growing in a greenhouse. As you can see, the character is blooming like a flower, but his eyes, mouth is stuck/covered, indicating that he has no voice/opinion. A thin plastic layer on top indicating that the character is under protection. The concept is a sheltered child, who has no voice on anything matters, is weak and disliked by peers.

Week 3

I have my first class in week 3. We are to watch tutorial videos prepared by the lecturer and learn Adobe Photoshop. We also need to create 3 digital collages for our task 2. I practice and try to create a collage in class.

1.

My first collage is quite complicated and is way too crowded. The concept I go for is a fishbowl effect, it's like watching the world inside a fishbowl, from the perspective of a fish. Pretend to be a fish, we watch the busy train station, filled by with people, bustling. But they have freedom, but as a fish inside a fishbowl, we are stuck here.

First try:

During the class session, I ask for opinion from lecturer. Mr. Fauzi suggest using golden ratio as a guide to create this collage. And ask me to turn the collage into vertical as most of the poster are in vertical. I should use less layers, less elements, so it won't be too messy like this. I change the design according to the comments given and have the final outcome as below, it does looks neater than the last one.

In this collage, I use:
- layering and blending
- object selection tool.

Final outcome:

2.

For my second collage, I go for a simpler visual, the first one is more chaotic so I want to try something simple, less is more. I use the building as my focal point. I was thinking about Bauhaus style as I create this collage, but I think it lacks of something, like life. I also think that the vintage xxx does not goes well with the whole concept. The overall visual looks dull and boring.

First try:

So, I use the human figure, and adult and a teenager to create motion. I added colour bubbles, as the symbol of lives, different bubbles represent different lives. I use pop colours as it brings lively vibes. It connects the building and human life, brings out the life concept.

In this collage, I use:
- lasso tool
- object selection tool
- layering and blending
- masking

Second try:

Final outcome:

3.

For the third collage, the station image really gives me a lot of inspiration. I use multiple objects from the station image to create this collage. I want to create a vintage, nostalgia like feeling for this collage. Something like an old memory hidden inside your brain.

I use the lighting, to create multiple layers with different colours. It looks like a change of lighting itself, reminding us about traffic light, motion-like. The elements here all reminding us about traffic in the city, bustling.

In this collage, I use:

- lasso tool

- object selection tool

- layering and blending

- edit the image itself by adjusting the elements and using filter.

First try:

Final outcome:

Reflection

I joined the class late, so I was super worried about whether I can keep up with the assignments and learning's or not. But as it turns out, I can keep up just fine, now I need to explore more on Photoshop and arts. This class feels like something I should take at the beginning of the course, because it allows me to learn about arts, the basic of arts. Because during my studies, I always feel like I lack of some artistic intuition and visuals, which causes me to create something really not nice/good looking/just bad. I really like this assignment as I can explore my creativity and doing all kinds of mix and match. It's really fun and inspiring. I'll keep on improving and learn more about arts. Thank you to my lecturer and friend to guide me through this process.
