Assignment brief
In this assignment, we need to produce a prototype based on our idea proposal. This includes asset producing, unity file and any other relevance materials. We need to explain our progress and the problem we face in this assignment.
Jump Link:
In this week, we just submit our proposal a few days ago, we basically just started to separate our tasks. For me, I will be creating most of the 3D modeling. For Unity, I will be focusing on creating UI elements like buttons, pop-up windows, ending page and etc.
Before we can start any 3d modeling, we need floorplan first. Based on the google map and photo online, I managed to create the floorplans for the building using Canva. It is very unprofessional, but it is good enough for us to produce 3d models and use as a map for users.
Floorplan:
During this week, I started on 3D modeling. I start with create the walls and floors according to the floorplan, placing the column at the correct place and etc. Basically, I'm just trying to build out the structure of the building first.
I continue on my 3D modeling this week. I started to apply materials, make sure that my 3d models can adapt to the materials well. Fortunately, I do this step earlier, so that I manage to realize that some of my models cannot applied on the materials well. Because for some parts of the models, I use extrude to create it, especially the columns. This cause that the materials to stretch and it can't apply on it well.
As we can see from the image above, the materials at the right column got stretched, and it doesn't show the texture like the column on the left. Thus, I need to redo some parts of the modeling that I use extrude to create.
After I solved those problem, I continue to applied materials for the rest of the models.
As I was focusing to do my 3d Models, the google map materials that I use to refer to create the 3d models got disappeared. This means that, I can only rely on the photo online to continue the process. This is quite dissapointing as I can't really get the accurate dimension, colour, texture, position of the 3d objects in the building. I will need to rely on photos, which is very limited because they don't cover every single part of the buildings. I am very worried about my models now as I still have a lot of minor details needed to be added.
Despite the trouble, I continue on my 3d modeling. I also experiment with different materials to find the most accurate that have the similar texture and colour as the real buildings.
Final Progress in week 9:
During week 10, I continue to do my 3d models too, I add in Renee's doors, windows and roof.
I also created the staircase at the main entrance and also the back of the house.
During this week, I started to compile the storyline too. I have done a lot of research on this building before, now, I just need to produce a complete storyline for this application. I also need to think about the clues and quiz questions to ask. I created this storyline by using real events + some fictional stories.
Storyline:
During 1800s, a wealthy family from Britain moved to Penang, Malaysia. They are the Ramsden Family. Their family thrived for decades until June 8th 1948. A family member, John St Maur Ramsden was murdered while he was climbing the stairs. The mysterious killer shot him twice at the back of his head resulting fatal death of John. The police department investigating this murder case yet there’s no definite evidence that point to the real killer of John. There are a few rumors and suspects, people said that he was killed by a competitor. A couple of suspects were arrested and put on trial, but the case remains unsolved.
On the day of murder, the Tamil estate watchman and three Malays heard a shot and found his body slumped behind the stairs. Hunter Crawford, manager of the neighboring Byram Estate, also heard the gunshots and rushed to the scene. The news quickly spread to the Ramsden family in England, where John’s divorced ex-wife, Lady Catherine and their daughter, Carola resides. At the coroner’s inquest Dr. Loudernernam gave evidence that Ramsden sustained the fatal injury from a pellet hitting the back of his skull.
During the investigation, the police department found two spent 16 bore shotgun cartridges and a shoe at the crime scene. The police moved quickly with 2 suspects detained for questioning. Ramsden’s driver Embi Bin Hashim, 27, described in the press as his ‘Head Boy’, was charged with ‘Illegal Possession of Ammunition’. Mohammad Zain bin Ramjan, a local plantation worker, a charge of ‘Murder’ was laid against. In the absence of a confession or eye witness any case against him relied on circumstantial evidence. One pair of Zain bin Ramjan’s shoes was found near the murder scene. The witness suggested his shoes had been planted there by someone who had a grudge against him. He denied he had been dismissed by Mr. Ramsden and on the night in question was at his cousin’s house in Bukit Mertajam.
Many years later, a new investigation team reinvestigate this case. Inside the house, they found many old letters written by a women named Elisah. In the letter, Elisah urged John to end the confliction of him with the other competitor, she also urged him to come back to Malaya as soon as he can and she expressed her love to John. Elisah seemed to be John’s mistress. Among all the letters, only one of them is written by John, he wrote: ‘Dear Elisah, hurry and hide, Embi will drive you to safety. I’ll join you soon,’ It shows that John knows that danger is nearing and obviously he was killed soon. They found a cufflink with the letter ‘MZ’ on it, a stack of complaint letter’s from MZ, handprints, torn clothes and all. Finally, all of the evident point to one single truth. Mohammad Zain has hold a great deal of grudge for John and he had killed John using a shotgun. After that, MZ escaped the scene by jumping from the balcony. Elisah knew who’s the killer from the start but she was too afraid to voice out and be recognized by public as the mistress of John. So, she kept quiet and grieving the death of John alone.
Then, according to the room, I created a room list that contain clues and also a list of quiz questions + clues.
I managed to finish off all the parts of the 3d modeling on Wednesday.
Final 3d Model:
But, after Renee import it into the Unity, it is not working. The materials are all gone. We panicked for awhile, and we first think of bake. We bake the 3d models, so the materials image is connected to the 3d models. After two days of baking and trying. I turn to online tutorial to look for solutions and finally, I learned how to solve this problem.
I was unwrapping the models, in order to bake:
I need to pack the materials folders, and I need to import this materials folder into unity. After I import into it, some of the materials automatically applied on the building. But some still remain plain white. For these parts, I need to manually applied the materials. I create new materials, open the materials folder and import the materials image onto the new materials. Now, I can use this materials and applied it on my 3d models.
Process:
After I have all the buttons and panels needed, now, I just need to arrange it in the Unity, using canvas, button, and image.

Reflection
Throughout this assignment, I learn a lot of different things. I have opportunity to polish my 3d modeling skills and learn to import 3d models into Unity with materials. I also learn a lot about building history and the storytelling. I have the chance to create a story and try to create an interactive way for the user to learn the background story of the building. Besides this, I am able to polish a little bit of my Unity skills, creating button and such. Before I am able to do all the Unity thing, I actually face some error while I open the file. But, it is solved by just deleting some folder inside the unity file. I have to do this every time I open a new Unity file.
But overall, I learn to multitasking. I have a lot of other assignments too and exam, which cause me to progress very slowly. But, I am still happy that I can finish the percentage of the process now. I still have a lot of things to do, I haven't start coding yet. And I still have interior 3d modeling to be done. But, I will try my best to complete all these by the deadline. This helps me to practice time management skills. Finally, I would like to thank my lecturer, Mr. Razif and my teammates, Renee to guide me through this assignment. I am grateful for the guidance.
