Assignment Brief:
In this assignment, we are to create short animation for the magic lockscreen. We have completed our poster design, and we are to use it to create animation.
As we are growing up, the place we are living in, our home our city are developing in rapid speed too. During childhood, we run around with nature surrounding us, no responsibility and free. As we grow up, we become mature and our responsibilities increases day by day. Look around us, our hometown had grown into a bustling city. As we grow up, we take our memories with us, every single moment become our life lessons. We grow together with our hometown, we see its growth and at the same time, it seen our growth.
In this week, I just record down my idea for the animation.
Consultation
During the consultation, lecturer advised that I don't need to do bird flapping but made it float up and down like it's flying. This way, it is simpler and minimalist. I can start to proceed with my animation.
To do this, I just convert the light ring image into a smart object. Then, I rotate it around and add in keyframe.
A bright light fills the whole screen and disappears
This needs two new elements, one small circle and a big square to cover the whole screen. For the circle, I enlarge and reduce it sizes, while adding key frame for it. So it looks like it fills up the whole space and return back to its original position again. For the square, I change its opacity and again, add in keyframe so it is able to cover all the whole screen and disappear again.
Flying bird
I simply move its position up and down and add in keyframe.
Peacock closes its wings
I need to crop and duplicate many of its wings. Then I rotate it, add in keyframe for each wing, to make it looks like it is closing its wings.
Consultation
Lecturer suggested to change the white colour light into yellow, or something similar with the light ring, so it looks more natural, like the light comes from the light ring.
In this week, I try to change the animation according to the comment from the lecturer. But I face a huge problem, my files was too big, and any of my changes will stop the software from working and eventually crash. After several crashes, I know I need to redo the whole thing again, because this file is not workable at all.
I change my focus to do the vertical version. I use similar technique and successfully created the vertical version of this animation. This time, I learn my mistakes to not make my file way too big. So, I separate my working file into 2, one is for the front part, where the background is darker, the other is with the city background.
This reduce the lagging problem and it does not crashes too much. After I finish the animation, I join them together.
The progress outcome:
Consultation:
I did not notice that we need to create a 15 second animation and my product is just in 5 seconds. This means that I need to create a longer video. I am worried about the working file size, because a 5 second animation can already crash, now I need to do 15 seconds, it is quite risky.
During this week, I focus on finishing my animation. The animation already looks good, now I need to loop my vertical version and create my square version.
Looping vertical animation
This is still working fine. I managed to loop it and render the video out. I only loop the last part of the video, where the birds floating and the light ring rotating. I make it rotate in another direction so it doesn't look too bored. I am scared that it will crash if I add in too much other elements. So, I choose to be safe and just loop the video.
Create square animation
This is where the challenge comes. My old working file is unable to work at all, means that I have to redo. I try to copy the elements of my square poster, so I can do it again. Even when I am just copying the elements, the file crash too, because the animation file was in the same file. Now, I learned my lesson to not include too many animation in one file.
When I was trying to create the square animation, multiple crashes occured again. I wasted a lot of time on just waiting the program to respond, and the computer to shut down and etc. This event occurs multiple times. Finally, I decided I cannot continue to work like this, I need a better computer to do it. So, I choose a time and date, to go to school and use school's computer there.
I am really not familiar with this computer, since I never use it before. The layout are totally different from windows, I use sometime to get used to it and manage to open my Adobe account and my working files. Then, I do the animation again for the square version.
I am worried about crashing again, and I am not familiar with using the computer, it slows me down a lot. My animation looks a bit different from my vertical version, because at here, I try to minimize the animation elements and also I have trouble comparing both my vertical and square version here. I try to make it as similar as it is but they still have some differences. One of it is the peacock, I did not do the peacock animation here because I want to reduce the animation elements.
After completing the animation, I put it into the template and render it out. Done.
Final Outcome
1. Vertical
2. Square
3. Template
Reflection
Throughout this assignment, I learn a great deal about Photoshop. I also k I really need to upgrade my laptop or else I will face bigger issues in the future if I need to do something similar again. I found that it is very interesting that we can do animation using Photoshop timeline. I thought that we can do it in After Effect or Animate only, if in Adobe software. Photoshop timeline is very similar to After Effects but it does not have that much function. Photoshop has a lot of limitation, but it is good enough for doing a small and simple animation like this.
I learned that I need to be patience and do not give up even after multiple failure. When I face the crashing of files again and again, I was really demotivated and tired. All my works just vanished again and again like that. But I know that I need to complete this, I need to find out a way to end this problem. Since my laptop is not capable for doing this, I will change a device. I just go to the school and use the computer there. It is not easier, since that I don't understand how the layout work, how to open the software, where to go for search engine and etc. But give it time, I manage to get used to it and successfully finish my animation project. Thank you to my lecturer and friends who guide me through this assignment.
